This Saturday Alli and I decided to head to the backside of Anacapa for an overnight trip. However the wind was from due South and only about 6 kts, so we tacked back and forth in vain for 4 hours and got about halfway there. Sigh. We had a great time nevertheless, saw a roving pod of dolphins several times, and got a chance to practice foresail changes. Alli also went overboard and got a nice tow-swim, and I got a fabulous sunburn on my back. On the way back I decided to see whether Shadow balances as well as Nevermind under jib alone -- we did much of the trip from Monterey to Pt Conception that way in 2005. Indeed she does! It was super fun to fly down the channel towards the slip under genoa, turn west and drop it, and zoom into the slip. Best docking I've ever done :-)

Nevermind the weather
Paolo and I took Shadow out yesterday afternoon for a lazy sail. It was light air 4-5 kts, so I did a sail change to the genoa, for practice, instead of putting it up right away. Shadow tracked nicely in the light air, and we passed a bunch of much bigger boats which were on a lower course than us when we were heading back into the harbor. Nevermind was also out, so I took a picture.

Rubrail and touch-ups
Well, it never ends, but it's important to celebrate the progress! On Saturday I did some touch-ups on the boat's paint job and installed a new rubrail. I should have taken some pictures, but I'd forgotten the camera. The rubrail is the same as the one on Ann Bonnie, and it looks great. The paint job is at this point complete, unless I go crazy later and decide to add another coat. I also looked into the electrical issues: the running lights, which are the most important thing, work fine, but the cabin lights and , I suspect, the mast light, aren't coming on. I isolated the problem to a voltage drop across a couple conduits connecting things to each other on my fuse box. Problem is, I can't be bothered to make a temporary fix of this -- I don't have the appropriate end fittings, and, ultimately, am I supposed to be rebuilding my electrics annually?!

Memorial Day sail
I took my housemates out for a sail on Memorial Day. It was just as gorgeous as Sunday, albeit a little windier. We had an awesome time! Amir was teetering on the edge of seasickness a lot of the time, but held on famously. On that note, I haven't had my ceremonial feeding of the fish this year. Perhaps motion sickness diminishes over the long run (years) as well as over the short run (a day or two)?

Coamings on
Well, the paintjob is pretty much finished, pending a couple touch-ups here and there, and I've reinstalled the wood coamings. Now the list of things still left to do is: install new rubrail, install compass, and install VHF antenna. I took my parents out for a sail yesterday, and it was absolutely gorgeous!
